Edward the Peacemaker Statue
The "Edward the Peacemaker" statue in Tiverton, Devon, is a bronze sculpture of King Edward VII by the sculptor Harry Hems. It was unveiled on "Empire Day" May 24th 1912, by the Countess of Plymouth, and is located on Lowman Bridge over the River Lowman.
The statue depicts the King standing in a relaxed pose, with his right hand resting on his hip and his left hand holding a scroll. He is wearing a military uniform and a bicorn hat. The statue is mounted on a granite pedestal, which bears the inscription "Edward VII the Peacemaker."
The statue was commissioned by Thomas Ford, a former Mayor of Tiverton, as a memorial to Edward VII, who had died in 1910. Ford was a great admirer of Edward VII, and believed that he had been a force for peace and stability in the world. Ford also paid for Lowman Bridge to be widened to make room for the statue!
The statue was unveiled on Empire Day, a public holiday in the British Empire that celebrated the birthday of the reigning monarch. The unveiling ceremony was a grand affair, with a large crowd of people in attendance. The Countess of Plymouth unveiled the statue, and the Mayor of Tiverton gave a speech in which he praised Edward VII and his reign. Huge crowds gathered on the day, and Ian, the son of Sir John Heathcoat, gave a silver threepence to every schoolchild!
The Edward VII statue is a popular tourist attraction in Tiverton. It is also a significant landmark in the town, and is a reminder of Tiverton's long and rich history.
In addition to its historical and cultural significance, the Edward VII statue is also a notable work of art. Harry Hems was a skilled architectural and ecclesiastical sculptor who ran a large workshop in Exeter, and the statue is a well-executed and realistic depiction of Edward VII. The statue is also well-situated on Lowman Bridge, where it is prominently displayed and can be enjoyed by passersby.
The Edward VII statue is a valuable asset to the town of Tiverton, and it is important that it is preserved and maintained for future generations.
